I just ordered a Kindle machine from Amazon; hopefully it will arrive in the next day or two, and I’ll have a chance to start playing with it. I’m tempted to offer a lengthy, detailed opinion about it right now, but since it would be based almost entirely on Amazon’s advertising material, I think it makes sense to wait.
In a similar vein, I’ve been surprised to see the pervasive whining and carping about Kindle from several prominent bloggers during the past 48 hours; maybe they’ve had a chance to play with one for a few days, but it’s hard to imagine that their negative opinions are based on deep experience. Indeed, it seems like the biggest gripe is that the bloggers and reviewers are annoyed that Amazon didn’t choose to include their publication in the device.
I have to admit that Kindle doesn’t look very pretty; part of me wishes Amazon had hired the iPod/iPhone team from Apple to do the industrial design. But that has nothing to do with its functionality; if it works as well as advertised, I think I’ll be pretty satisfied.
Stay tuned…
