About an hour ago, the Nobel Committee announced that Al Gore is the recipient for this year’s Nobel Peace Prize, largely because of his efforts to increase awareness of the global warming problem — based at least partly on his film, An Inconvenient Truth. I have family members who haven’t bothered seeing the movie yet, and others who believe global warming is either exaggerated, or a hoax; I’ll be curious to see what they think of all of this.
Completely unrelated to all of this, I found myself thinking last night, while stuck in a massive traffic jam coming home from the airport, that a hundred years from now, nobody will have automobiles — or at least not gasoline-powered cars. It may seem entirely unrealistic to imagine such a world — but it’s worth remembering that only a little more than a hundred years ago, nobody had automobiles. Measured against the 10,000 years of “civilized” human society, the 200-year period in which the world’s economy and society was based entirely on oil is a rather short period indeed.
Meanwhile, I’ll also be curious to see what the Nobel award does to Gore’s political career …

Al Gore, congratulations on winning the Nobel Peace Prize. Now it is time to announce your wish to become America’s president, take your seat in the White House, and be the leader we have all been waiting for to move beyond the corrupt system of Empire and towards Earth community. Kudos to the Nobel Committee for realizing that sustainability is peace.
